  • Orlando Pirates' bold ghost skull is one of the most sought-after kits in South Africa
  • Moroka Swallows have boasted the trendiest kit to be created by a local designer
  • Kaizer Chiefs have always been top-tier when giving their supporters attractive gear

The best kit helps one step out in style on the pitch or the streets.

A team's uniform can be symbolic, make a statement or be a salute to tradition, with the identifying features etched into the imaginations of supporters.

Teams all over the world rely on their kit suppliers to provide designs that separate them from their rivals or place them in elite discussions.

The array of kit available showcase the solid and simple as well as the out-of-the-box and eye-catching. South African domestic teams have a list of fine threads, but which are the best?

Here is the top half of the table, with eight DStv Premiership kits ranked:

8. SuperSport United

Like most of the Umbro designs for this season, the SuperSport United kit is simple yet elegant.

What separates Matsatsantsa a Pitori from other Umbro-wearers, like Amazulu, is the bright stripes that break up the Royal Blue of the home kit.

Not as inspiring as Bradley Grobler's finishing, but a consistent effort for a consistent team.

7. TS Galaxy

Like their charismatic owner, The Rockets' geometric patterns have set them apart from the rest.

The clashing black and red of either the home or away strip is an immediate marker to know one is watching Galaxy.

This kit has shone brightest in the cup competitions and could be captured in trophy-winning photos to come.

6. Kaizer Chiefs

The black and gold is the perfect palette to start any design and Chiefs' kit suppliers have seldom disappointed.

The 2023/24 uses the geometric trend to perfection, mixing the black into the traditional gold with style.

Fans of the Glamour Boys demand excellence and in this kit, they can always leave the house confident.

5. Mamelodi Sundowns

Msandawana's home kit is the simple yellow design but the blue away kit is the one for supporters this season.

Simple at first, but up close the intricate shapes and contours give a subtle classyness that mirrors the champion's style of play.

Not as adventurous as Puma have tried before, but Sundowns let the football catch the eye.

4. Cape Town City

The navy and light blue wavy hoops with the yellow trim is one of Umbro's best efforts in the 2023/24 season.

The Cape Town City home kit far outshines the away option, giving their home supporters something worth wearing on their nights out in Sea Point.

City have built a great matchday experience and having a kit that all supporters feel unified in wearing translates into a considerable crowd attendance.

3. Orlando Pirates

The large skull on the chest was divisive at first but is fast becoming a collector's item.

With on-field success this season, the striking kit is becoming synonymous with tough defending and attacking flair, giving off an intimidating aura.

The away kit is less impressive but Pirates can always lean on this ghost to give them the psychological advantage before a ball is even kicked.

2. Moroka Swallows

Designed and marketed by Lekau Sehoana's Drip Footwear, the Beautiful Birds have a vibrant home kit.

Swallows' maroon colours has always lent itself to great kits but with the Swallows silhouette adorning the sleeves and hem, the Swallows kit looks good.

The home kit is the flagship design, but Swallows' Drip range gets progressively better when exploring the training and fan gear.

1. Royal AM

Sleek in either black or white, Royal AM look regal in a kit that could double as fashionista evening wear.

The tight collar and majestic print show an ambitious creative streak that displays the ambition of the owners and their supporters.

The gold accents are a nod to future success but results need to turn around or risk looking better than they play.
