Callaghan signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in 1960, a year after Bill Shankly became the head coach. He became a first-team player and debuted in a 4-0 win against Bristol Rovers on 16 April. His outstanding performance in the game made fans, players, and the referee clap for him as he walked out of the field.

Ian Callaghan changed position from playing as a wing-half in his school days to becoming a right winger at Liverpool. He helped the club win the Second Division title in 1962 and climb to the top flight. The midfielder made 23 league appearances for the club during the 1961-62 season.

Shanky's side finished eighth in their season back to the First Division. They won the title in the following season, 1963-64, finishing four points above rivals Manchester United. They also won the FA Cup in 1965, beating Leeds United 2-1 in the final at Wembley.

Ian married former beauty queen Linda Foulder for several years before divorcing in the early 80s. Despite separating, they remained good friends until her death. Linda was a famous model in the 1960s. She won numerous titles, including Miss Liverpool and Miss New Brighton.

The former Ian Callaghan's wife also worked as a sales negotiator for a housing firm. She had lung cancer in October 2008 and died in April 2009, aged 61.
