After attending a scouting camp for the NASL's Vancouver Whitecaps in South Africa in 1979, he was signed by the team. Grobbelaar played for the Vancouver Whitecaps when former England and Blackpool goalkeeper Tony Waiters was the team's manager.

On 17 March 1981, Grobbelaar joined Liverpool for £250,000 as their backup goalkeeper. However, after Ray Clemence left for Tottenham Hotspur in mid-1981, he was promoted to the starting position.

In mid-1994, Grobbelaar made a free move to Southampton from Liverpool. He was with the Saints for two seasons, going up against quirky goalkeeper Dave Beasant. Manager Alan Ball stuck by him through the controversy surrounding match-fixing suspicions, and he played for most of the 1994-95 campaign.

In 1996–97, he played for Plymouth. Over the following two years, he would have brief stints with Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Oldham Athletic, Chesham United, Bury, Lincoln City, and Northwich Victoria before returning to South Africa.

International career

Bruce was raised in Rhodesia, where he developed his football skills. At 19, he debuted for Rhodesia in a 1977 friendly against South Africa. In 1982, he started both Zimbabwe's World Cup qualifying matches against Cameroon. For his national team, he played against Egypt in a 1986 World Cup qualifying match.

After an extended hiatus (many years), he was reinstated to the national team in 1992. Zimbabwe, led by coach Reinhard Fabisch and including Grobbelaar, Adam, and Peter Ndlovu, came within one game of qualifying for the 1994 World Cup. Between the years 1980 and 1998, Grobbelaar played 32 times for Zimbabwe.

Coaching career

He managed to coach Seven Stars in 1999 and pulled the team from the relegation zone to finish fourth in the final league table. He assumed leadership of the faltering Hellenic in 2001. He helped keep the team from being relegated.

He has coached for Supersport United, Manning Rangers (2004), and Umtata Bush Bucks (2004) and has served as player-manager for the Zimbabwe national team twice (in 1997 and 1998) for brief periods. At 44, he held the record for the oldest player in South African league history until teammate keeper Andre Arendse broke it in 2013.

Bruce Grobbelaar's stats

He made 628 appearances for Liverpool in 13 years, including 440 in the League. He won the League championship with the club six times, as well as three FA Cups, three League Cups, and the 1983–84 European Cup.

Bruce Grobbelaar and betting allegations

During his tenure with Liverpool, Grobbelaar was accused of rigging matches to benefit a betting syndicate on 10 November 1994 after he was caught on tape discussing match-fixing. The goalkeeper for Wimbledon, Hans Segers, the striker for Aston Villa, John Fashanu (who had recently been bought from Wimbledon), and a Malaysian businessman named Heng Suan Lim were all charged with corruption conspiracy alongside him.

He maintained his innocence by saying he was merely collecting material to turn over to authorities. He and the other defendants were acquitted in November 1997 after two trials in which the juries deadlocked.

Grobbelaar later sued 'The Sun' for libel and was paid £85,000. The Sun filed an appeal, which was heard by the House of Lords, which ruled that while the precise charges had not been proven, there was sufficient evidence of dishonesty.

Lord Bingham of Cornhill noted that Grobbelaar was declared bankrupt because he could not pay the case expenses. After being acquitted of match rigging charges, he and Segers continued playing for some time.
