FootballChampions League: Analysing the ‘Group of Death’ After 4 Matches As Dortmund Leads Line
- The UEFA Champions League's Group F is living up to its hype as the 'Group of Death'
- Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Newcastle United, and PSG could all make the last 16
- It is the only UCL group where all four teams can genuinely qualify for the knockouts
When the UEFA Champions League draw took place on August 31, everyone had the same observation about Group F, featuring Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Newcastle United, and Borussia Dortmund.
Many pundits ruled out the Magpies in their return to the European elite competition for the first time in 20 years, but Eddie Howe’s side has shown they can hold their own against the other big guns.
However, Newcastle's defeat to Borussia Dortmund on November 7 dealt a devastating blow to their Champions League ambitions and saw them slip to the bottom of the group with four points from four matches.
However, the English side can take solace in the fact that the group is still very much open, as they only lie three points behind the German giants.
What can happen in Group F?
The so-called 'Group of Death' is living up to its hype since after four games, all the teams' fates lie in their own hands as far as advancing to the last 16 is concerned.
PSG, who were expected to dominate, were dealt a brutal reality check on October 4 when they were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle, two weeks after beating Dortmund 2-0.
Then on Tuesday, November 7, Milan got their campaign back on track with a 2-1 win over the Parisians, a result that was the perfect revenge for a 3-0 defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture.
Here is how Group F looks after four rounds of matches, as per UEFA.com:
Games Played | Goal difference | Points | |
Dortmund | 4 | 1 | 7 |
Paris Saint-Germain | 4 | 1 | 6 |
AC Milan | 4 | -2 | 5 |
Newcastle | 4 | 0 | 4 |
Man United would have to part with record fee to sack Erik ten Hag
FootballCan Newcastle pull off a surprise?
From the standings, it looks as if like nothing is settled quite yet and anything can happen in the last two group matches for each team.
Newcastle will have to upset PSG again in France on November 28 before trying to bypass Milan at St James’ Park on December 13.
Dortmund, who lead the group, also have it very tough as they face PSG and AC Milan, who also desperately need points to advance.
It will be interesting to see how the final table looks in the Group of Death.
