  • Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has defended his side’s tactics after going down to nine men against Chelsea
  • The North Londoners were thrashed 4-1 in a fiery game that saw two red cards
  • But Spurs maintained a very high line and were determined to attack despite their numerical disadvantage

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou remained defiant as he defended his tactics against Chelsea on Monday, November 6.

The Australian saw his side’s unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end as Spurs succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in a highly engaging Premier League encounter.

Nicolas Jackson’s hat trick proved to be very decisive as Chelsea came from behind after a pivotal moment in the game that saw Christian Romero and Destiny Udogie shown red cards.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ange Postecoglou’s side still maintained a very high line, something which pundits dubbed ‘tactical suicide’.

The manager simply refused to compromise as he maintained the attacking philosophy that has been so familiar with his Tottenham side this campaign.

Unsurprisingly, the tactic backfired horribly, and Chelsea players consistently found themselves in acres of space against their depleted opponents. This was rewarded through Jackson’s three goals as the Blues sealed all three points in a topsy-turvy campaign for the Blues, as reported by BBC.

Postecoglou’s take after the game

Speaking after the game, Ange Postecoglou refused to accept that the high-line tactic was a mistake, instead saying he would not back down from his attacking philosophy.

“It is just who we are mate,” he said after the game as cited on Standard.co.uk.
“It is who we are and who we will be for as long as I am here. If we go down to five men, we will have a go.”

At some point, it looked like the brave tactic was actually paying off as Spurs battled with nine men for long periods of the game with the scores 1-1.

The Gunners went the entire season unbeaten in 2003, and it almost looked like their bitter North London rivals would replicate that achievement.
