FootballAnthony Taylor: Chelsea, Mourinho and Roma Fans Celebrate English Referee’s Demotion
- Premier League referee Anthony Taylor has been demoted to the Championship
- He has been responsible for many questionable officiating over the years in England and Europe
- The news came as a delight to Chelsea and Roma fans, by extension, Jose Mourinho lovers
Chelsea and AS Roma fans, and by extension Jose Mourinho lovers, are in a celebratory mood after the news of the demotion of Premier League referee Anthony Taylor to the Championship.
Taylor is among English football's leading and best officials with continental and international recognition. He was one of the two English referees at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Michael Oliver being the other, after a total omission from the 2018 edition.
However, despite being highly rated, he is arguably the most controversial official overseeing games in the Premier League, with many questionable decisions under his belt.
His controversial officiating has caught up with him. He will be officiating in the Championship this weekend in charge of Preston vs Coventry, his first time in the first division since 2019, per Express & Star.
The decision to demote him came from awarding a nonexistent penalty for Newcastle against Wolves after adjudging Hwang Hee-Chan to have caught Fabian Schar.
Chelsea fans celebrate Taylor's demotion
Chelsea are the club to have felt aggrieved the most by Taylor's officiating. As recirculated by CFC Blues on social media, the fans compiled a video of his questionable decisions against their club.
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has a long history with the referee, most recently in the 2023 UEFA Europa League final, which his Roma side lost to Sevilla.
Roma were due a penalty with the scores level at 1-1 after a Sevilla handball, which Taylor waved despite VAR review. Mourinho ambushed the referee in the parking lot and insulted him, earning him a four-game European ban.
