  • Cape Town Spurs' coaches used a newspaper article to inspire a fighting response at home
  • The Urban Warriors had not won a game all season but dug deep to earn their three points
  • Orlando Pirates are now 15 points off the top spot having played the same number of games

Public scorn provided the motivation for a gutsy performance in the Mother City.

Cape Town Spurs ended their eight-game DStv Premiership losing streak with an unexpected victory over Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night.

Speaking in a post-match interview, man of the match Keagan Buchanan alluded to the source of the Urban Warriors' fire on November 1.

Cape Town Spurs took an early lead when Lubeni Haukongo pounced on a flick-on from a deep cross to poke home from close range in the third minute.

A lively DHL Stadium urged Spurs for more. Jarrod Moroole made it 2-0 half an hour later with a well-timed run into the box and a fortuitous finish at the second opportunity.

Ashley Cupido should have made it three minutes later but shot tamely into Melusi Buthelezi's arms. Evidence Makgopa scored for Pirates just before half-time to set up a tense second period.

Spurs ground out the 2-1 win and the players were visibly ecstatic at having earned their first three points.

Buchanan said after the game:

"Massive win. All credit to the boys and technical team, for sticking with us through all of it. Every session we remind the younger boys that we can turn this around."

The Spurs playmaker then mentioned what had galvanised their resolve in the moments before the game, per SuperSport:

"There was a newspaper article that quoted someone as saying that this was a warm-up game for them. The coach put that in the changeroom and said 'Is this what you want them to think of us? Your family reads'. The boys were riled up and took that as a way to show that we belong in this league."
