As Lionel Messi continues to bask in the glory of being declared the best player of 2023, he has continued to reveal some of the secrets of his illustrious career that has seen him become arguably the greatest player in history.

The Argentine veteran picked up his eighth Ballon d'Or title during the awards ceremony on Monday, October 30. He now has three more than his closest challenger, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi's career goals

Speaking after the awards, the Inter Miami forward was put to task to disclose the favourite goal of his career. For a person like Messi, who has scored over 800 goals (821 to be precise) in 1,044 appearances, picking one might be a little bit hard - but there is one that the former Barcelona captain can't forget.

Of the 821 goals, there have been borderline golazos that left the world in awe: like the free kick he bent past Alisson Becker when he played against Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League semi-final or the chipped goal against Real Betis in La Liga, among many others.

He has scored in major finals, including the Champions League final and, most recently, the World Cup final in Qatar.

Lionel Messi's stats vs Real Madrid

The 36-year-old, however, picked a goal against Barcelona's greatest rival - Real Madrid. During his time in Spain, he played 47 times against the El Clasico rivals, scoring 26 times, as captured by Transfermarkt.

Messi admitted that his scores against the Los Blancos in the Champions League in 2011 were goals he would remember forever.

"I don’t know, a goal that I always remember - and I don’t go much for the goal and for what the goals mean - it’s the goal against Real Madrid, which we beat 2-0 in that Champions League semifinal at the [Santiago] Bernabeu."

Said goal against Real Madrid saw the Argentine play a one-two with Sergio Busquets before darting almost the entire half-pitch length, evading the white shirts, before slotting the ball past the legendary Iker Casillas.
