  • Kylian Mbappe has been told the 'secret' to winning the Ballon d’Or
  • The Frenchman lost out to Lionel Messi in the 2023 edition this week
  • Mbappe was ranked third behind the Argentine and Erling Haaland

Kylian Mbappe has been told playing in the Ligue 1 'hampers his chances' of winning the Ballon d’Or after losing out in the 2023 edition to Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi.

The 24-year-old forward had a phenomenal year, reaching the World Cup final and also winning the French league title with Paris Saint-Germain, but finished third in the Ballon d’Or rankings behind Erling Haaland and Messi.

According to Sportskeeda, journalist Bruno Alemany has stated that Mbappe would be the favourite to win next year’s award ahead of Haaland, but only if he agrees to leave PSG.

"Messi was incredible. Mbappé, meanwhile, suffers from the fact that he plays in the French championship. But he is the big favourite to win the next Ballon d'Or."

Mbappe’s contract at PSG expires at the end of the season and he could be on his way to Real Madrid next summer, with club president, Florentino Perez said to be a big fan of the France captain.

Messi predicts Ballon d’Or win for Mbappe

Meanwhile, Messi is rooting for Mbappe to win the Ballon d’Or someday in his career after acknowledging the 24-year-old forward has the potential to become the world’s best, GOAL reports.

The 36-year-old superstar shared the message to his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate and runner-up, Haaland after winning his record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or on Monday, October 30.

Mbappe had a fantastic season in front of goal, scoring 55 goals for both France and PSG in the previous season as he lifted the Ligue 1 title and was awarded the Golden Boot of the World Cup.

PSG celebrate Messi and Mbappe

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on PSG releasing a statement congratulating Messi, Mbappe, and Randal Kolo Muani for their achievements in the 2023 Ballon d'Or.

Messi won his eighth award, beating Man City's Haaland and his former PSG teammate, who finished second and third respectively. Kolo Muani finished 29th.

Messi received the 2023 award, perhaps his last, after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his win is also seen as somewhat controversial.
