  • Robert Sanchez's foul on Gabriel Jesus during the Chelsea vs Arsenal clash continues to draw sharp reactions
  • The Chelsea goalkeeper took out the Arsenal striker, but VAR failed to intervene and award a possible penalty
  • The incident was almost similar to Andre Onana's at the start of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers

An explanation has finally been issued on why the Video Assistant Referee did not intervene to award a possible penalty during Arsenal's visit to Chelsea last weekend.

The two London rivals played out to a thrilling two-all draw at Stamford Bridge, with the Gunners rallying from deep to salvage a point.

Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk had put the Blues two up before the 50th minute. Just when Mauricio Pochettino's side appeared to be in full control, Robert Sanchez played a wayward pass to Declan Rice, who pulled one back. Leandro Trossard then came off the bench to net the equaliser from close range.

It wasn't the only misdoing of Sanchez on the night. The Chelsea number one appeared to wipe out Gabriel Jesus as they tussled for the ball. Surprisingly, VAR did recommend any further action, with pundits led by Alan Shearer left convinced that it ought to have been a penalty for Mikel Arteta's charges.

New information has now come to light to explain why VAR turned a blind eye to the incident. ESPN journalist and VAR expert Dale Johnson has explained that when Martin Odegaard swung the ball into the area, Takehiro Tomiyasu was in an offside position.

The fullback made the first contact with the ball before Sanhez arrived to take out Jesus. The former Brighton man did not get anywhere close to ball as he clattered into Jesus.

By virtue of Tomiyasu being offside, any other action that came afterwards was rendered irrelevant.

Comparisons were drawn to the Andre Onana incident where the Manchester United goalkeeper crashed into Wolves striker Sasa Kalajdzic. The referee's body PGMOL issued an apology to Wolves for failing to award the spot-kick.

Chelsea fans fault Robert Sanchez

Sports Brief has also reported that Chelsea fans have singled out Robert Sanchez for their draw against Arsenal in an entertaining London derby on October 21.

The Gunners staged a late comeback to come from two goals down to maintain their unbeaten start to the league season.

Things would have been much different if Chelsea kept their concentration for the full 90 minutes as they were in control of the game for large parts thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk.
