FootballSandro Tonali: Newcastle Star Could Play Against Wolves Despite Betting Ban
- Sandro Tonali was hit with a 10-month ban for betting on illegal platforms
- The Italian midfielder could still be available for Newcastle's trip to Wolves
- Head coach Eddie Howe claimed the ban is yet to be stamped by FIGC
Sandro Tonali could still be available to play for Newcastle United against Wolverhampton Wanderers despite receiving a 10-month betting ban during the week.
Tonali was the second Italian player to receive a lengthy ban for betting on illegal platforms after Juventus and U21 teammate Nicolo Fagioli was handed a seven-month ban last week.
The midfielder, who joined Newcastle for €70 million in the summer per The Athletic, was said to have placed a bet on AC Milan to win during his time with the Serie A club.
He will miss the rest of the season and the UEFA Euro 2024 holding next year in Germany but will return in August ahead of the new season.
Tonali could play against Wolves
Speaking to the media ahead of the Magpies' trip to the Molineux Stadium tomorrow to face Wolves, Eddie Howe said the 23-year-old is available for selection unless something changes.
"We've not had official confirmation as a football club. We've not had anything from the Italian authorities, so we are waiting for that official confirmation to come through," he said via Sky Sports.
"There's a high chance he could be available for us. A few things need to happen before the ban is imposed, so let's see."
The former Brescia midfielder played in the 1-0 Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund a day before his ban was announced. After Howe's statement, it may not be his last game in a while.
Per multiple reports in the English media, Manchester City outcast Kalvin Philips and former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves are alternatives the Toons are considering on a short-term basis.
