Sports Brief looks at eight other footballers who have been slapped with suspension over betting offences.

1. Nicolo Fagioli

Fagioli was the first to be pinned by the Turin Prosecutor in the ongoing investigation into illegal betting in Italy. He was handed a seven-month ban. Per Goal, he claimed Tonali introduced him to the platforms and also implicated Nicolo Zaniolo.

2. Harry Tofolo

The Nottingham Forest defender was banned for five months and fined £20,000 for breaching FA betting rules on 375 occasions, as reported by The Athletic. He was the second player in English football to be suspended recently for the offence.

3. Ivan Toney

Brentford striker Ivan Toney was slapped with an eight-month ban after he was convicted of breaching FA betting rules on 232 occasions and was fined £50,000. He was also diagnosed with addiction and was said to have received a minimal sentence for cooperating with authorities.

4. Daniel Sturridge

The former Liverpool striker was suspended for four months in 2020 and fined £150,000 after he told his brother to place a bet on a possible move to Sevilla, which eventually collapsed. He was contracted to Trabzonspor then, and the Turkish club terminated his contract.

5. Joey Barton

In 2017, the controversial English midfielder was banned for 18 months, reduced to 13 on appeal after placing 1,260 bets in 10 years. The suspension forced him to end his career and retire professionally.

6. Andros Townsend

Townsend was suspended for four months, reduced to one after appeal and fined £18,000 for betting in 2013. He was diagnosed with addiction, and during an interview with Sky Sports, he opened up on losing £46,000 on a single game.

7. Kieran Trippier

The Newcastle captain was suspended for 10 weeks and fined £70,000 in 2020 after being confirmed to have tipped off his friends in a WhatsApp group about his move to Atletico Madrid. Though unaware, the friends placed bets.

8. Kynan Isaac

As reported by BBC Sports, Stratford defender Kynan Isaac was banned from football activities for 10 years, and it was extended to 12 years later for intentionally receiving yellow cards and telling his friends to bet on it. His failure to cooperate with authorities earned him one year as part of his suspension, meaning he is suspended till 2034.

Fans criticise Brentford's sponsor

Sports Brief previously reported on fans criticising Brentford's shirt sponsor after their striker was banned for months over an activity promoted by the company on the front of the shirt.

The club's decision to retain Hollywood Bets as the main shirt sponsor was met with outrage by fans who accused the club of lack of support for the embattled striker.
