  • Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong are back training for Barcelona
  • The duo could feature for the Catalans against Real Madrid on Saturday
  • Both Barcelona players picked up injuries before the international break

Barcelona have been given a big boost ahead of El Clasico this weekend after injured duo Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong returned to train with the first team.

Lewandowski, La Liga’s top scorer last season, and De Jong have been out of action for the Catalans since before the international break due to hamstring and ankle problems, respectively.

According to Barca Universal, the duo are now expected to be named in Barcelona’s squad when they host La Liga leaders Real Madrid after returning to training ahead of the crucial game.

Lewandowski is even expected to be named in the starting line-up by Xavi as the Poland forward is tipped to partner Joao Felix in attack despite only returning from a hamstring injury.

Barcelona will host Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season on Saturday, October 28, at the Estadio Olimpico Lluis Companys, with just one point separating both teams on the La Liga table.

Barcelona to overcome injury worries

Barcelona head into El Clasico against Real Madrid with Xavi’s squad plagued by several injuries which might prove too costly for the reigning La Liga champions, ESPN reports.

Raphinha, Pedri and Jules Kounde have all been sidelined for the biggest game in La Liga this season as they have not recovered in time to be selected against Los Blancos due to their varying injuries.

Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong are, however, expected to feature after both players were involved in Thursday’s training session and could make their return to the first team after almost a month out.

Barcelona injury worries pile up

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Barcelona secured a narrow victory to preserve their unbeaten start to the season against Ernesto Valverde's Athletic Club.

Xavi Hernandez's side were plagued with significant injury challenges and had to rely on the talents of La Masia Academy prospect Marc Guiu, who marked his league debut with an 80th-minute goal to secure the win.

In their encounter with Athletic, the Catalan club was without the services of key players, including Jules Kounde, captain Sergio Roberto, striker Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha Belloli, and midfielders Pedri Gonzalez and Frenkie de Jong.
