  • Harry Maguire was the hero for Manchester United on Tuesday, October 24
  • The defender restored United’s Champions League ambitions with a winner against Copenhagen
  • In his post-match remarks, Maguire appeared to criticize his side’s attackers

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire subtly criticized his team’s attackers after heroics in the 1-0 victory over Copenhagen.

In a game where redemption was seemingly the theme, Maguire emerged as the unlikely hero with a header in the 72nd minute when it almost looked like the Danish giants would frustrate the home side.

Late in the game, Andre Onana, who has also had his fair share of criticism since joining United, saved a penalty from Jordan Larsson, sending Old Trafford into delirium as that piece of action proved to be the difference between a win and a draw for Erik ten Hag’s side.

What Maguire said after the game

Speaking at full-time in the presence of Onana, Maguire admitted his side needed to be more clinical.

“It was incredible. We’ve got to be more clinical and get our second goal as we had numerous countr attacks,” he told TNT Sports.
“We didn’t give them a chance really on the second half. The first half was really poor but we came out of the second half a lot better.”

Maguire went on to add that the victory was ‘meant to be’, dedicating the win to the late Sir Bobby Charlton, as per BBC.

He added: “We were meant to win the game. A magnificent save and a win dedicated to Sir Bobby and his family.”

It was refreshing to see Maguire on the good side of the fans as both he and Onana have endured a torrid spell of criticism and gaffes on the football pitch in recent months.

Onana was particularly under fire for his roles in United’s last two Champions League defeats, against Bayern Munich and Copenhagen.

Maguire and Onana’s decent form is quite timely as it comes just days before the Manchester derby.

United will come up against familiar foes Manchester City on Sunday, October 29, before a crunch EFL Cup tie against Newcastle United on November 1.

Ozil applauds Onana and Maguire

Sports Brief also reported on how Mesut Ozil applauded Maguire and Onana at full-time after the duo’s heroics in the Copenhagen win.

After their heroics, former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil took to social media and praised the two players:

"Harry Maguire & Andre Onana deserve that - silencing their haters 🤫"
