United's Champions League adventure could have been seriously threatened if they had lost the game to the Danish champions after losing their opening two games to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.
Copenhagen were the better side for most of the game but could not find a breakthrough as they wasted chances after chances, while the Red Devils wasted chances of their own.
Maguire scores for Manchester United
The Red Devils also struggled to make an impact on the game, particularly in the first half. The breakthrough came in the second through the much-maligned Harry Maguire.
Per Supersport, he rose the highest to meet Christian Eriksen's cross and headed home for the game's only goal. The goal was initially checked for offside but was given.
Onana saves last-minute penalty
United appeared destined to be going home with all three points, but Scott McTominay conceded a last-minute penalty to hand Copenhagen some hope.
Andre Onana kept his cool, dived the right way and saved Jordan Larsson's spot-kick to preserve the lead. He was immediately surrounded by his teammates as he and Maguire breathed a sigh of relief after difficult times.
