  • The 2023/24 La Liga continued to deliver after Matchday 10
  • Barcelona and Atletico Madrid won but Real Madrid were held to a draw
  • Girona thrashed Almeria and are level on points with league leaders Real Madrid

Matchday 10 of La Liga was an eventful one. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid won, while Real Madrid were held to a draw on Saturday.

Los Blancos are still top of the table but are tied on 25 points with Girona, a point ahead of Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid are fourth after playing nine games.

Carlo Ancelotti's team was close to losing their second league match of the season against Sevilla but narrowly secured a draw. David Alaba scored an own goal in the 78th minute before Dani Carvajal rescued a draw with a goal four minutes later.

Meanwhile, Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0 thanks to a debut goal from Marc Guiu. Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Celta Vigo 3-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Antoine Griezmann.

Surprise package Girona continued with their incredible start to the season with an emphatic 5-2 win over Almeria. They bounced back after going 2-0 down.

Celta, Granada, and Almeria occupy the 18th, 19th, and 20th spots on the table.

The first El Clasico of the season is set for Saturday, October 28, and it is finely poised. If Barcelona win, they will go above Real Madrid, and if Ancelotti's men win, they will extend their lead.

2023/24 La Liga top scorers

Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham has been the story of the season so far. He is the leading top scorer in La Liga with eight goals from nine games. On Saturday, however, Sevilla kept him quiet.

Atletico's Antoine Griezmann is second with seven goals from eight games. Seven players, including Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo, have scored five goals.

Last season's Golden Boot winner, Robert Lewandowski, has scored five goals for Barcelona but is currently out with an ankle injury and could miss the upcoming El Clasico.

El Clasico, Girona dream start

The major talking point this week will be El Clasico, arguably the biggest club match in all of Europe. The first El Clasico of the season will kick off on Saturday evening, and the result could determine who wins the league.

However, in the last few seasons, the fixture has experienced a decline following the departure of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. This weekend, the likes of Bellingham, Joao Felix, Lamine Yamal, and others will have to step up and make themselves famous.

Another talking point of the weekend was Girona. They have won eight, lost one, and drawn one of their 10 games. They have scored 24 goals, more than any other La Liga team.

Moreover, they have scored more goals than Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, PSG, and Napoli. They face an out-of-form Celta Vigo on Friday and could go top of La Liga for some hours at least.

How Marc Guiu reacted after dream goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that young debutant Marc Guiu revealed that he would find it difficult to sleep after securing a last-minute 1-0 victory for Barcelona against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday, October 22.

The 17-year-old forward, brought in by Xavi from the bench, swiftly made an impact late in the game, propelling the Catalans to the third spot on the league table.
