Xabi Alonso has still got it.
The former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder may have transitioned to management but is still a maestro with the ball at his feet.
That was evident after Leverkusen released a video from their training session, which showed Alonso working together with players.
In the video, Alonso can be seen pinging some pinpoint passes to his players. The Spaniard made it look effortless, highlighting just what a talented player he is.
Alonso’s time as a player
The Spaniard was a product of Real Sociedad, but really made a name for himself once he moved to Liverpool.
There he won major trophies and showed just how talented he is. As noted by Transfermarkt, Alonso made 210 appearances for The Reds, scoring 18 goals and notching up 20 assists.
At Madrid, he featured 236 times, scoring six goals and notching up 31 assists.
A successful transition to management
After retiring in 2017, Alonso got into management and took up a post as Youth Coach at Real Madrid in 2018.
A year later, he became a manager of Real Sociedad B, which continued until 2022 when he was named the new coach of Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso has really turned things around at Leverkusen, taking them from a relegation-threatened side to the top of the Bundesliga.
Alonso seen as Ancelotti successor
Given that he became a Real Madrid legend during his time at the club, and that he coached the youth team, it makes sense that Alonso would return to Los Blancos.
