The UEFA Champions League is one of the most prestigious club competitions in the world and winning it is the ultimate goal for many players and clubs.

Karim Benzema, Dani Carvajal, Luka Modrić, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paolo Maldini, and Alfredo Di Stéfano are some of the most successful players in the competition, having won it on five different occasions.

Most of the players achieved the feat with Real Madrid, who are incidentally the most successful club in the European competition.

According to Sporting News, the La Liga giants have 14 European titles in their cabinet - the most by any club in history.

Real Madrid's most recent triumph in the competition came in 2022 when they beat Liverpool in the final staged in Paris.

Meanwhile, while a number of footballers who can pass as great have had the opportunity to lift the Champions League, there are several others who never got a taste of glory despite their illustrious careers.

Ibrahimovic never won the UCL

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one such player, with the Swedish icon ending his career at age 41 without laying his hands on the prestigious continental crown.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona striker enjoyed an illustrious career in Europe spanning several years but never got an opportunity to lift the trophy.

So much so that Mario Balotelli recently trolled him on Instagram after he claimed that the Italian forward had failed to 'live up to his billing' for lack of discipline.

The Mirror reports that the Italian issued a brutal response to Ibrahimovic's criticism by sharing a photo of himself celebrating with the UCL trophy.

Iconic players who tasted UCL glory

Brazil football icon Ronaldo Nazario, Argentina legend Diego Maradona, and Italian goalkeeping icon Gianluigi Buffon are among the greatest players who never won the UCL.

The trio enjoyed successful football careers in Europe, with Buffon turning out for the likes of AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Others include Roma icon, Francesco Totti and Arsenal legends, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.

Guardiola surpasses Ferguson's UCL record

Sports Brief also reported on Guardiola surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson's UCL record after Man City beat RB Leipzig 3-1 to maintain a perfect start to their title defence.

It was the 103rd win of the Spaniard's Champions League career, surpassing Sir Alex's 102. Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti holds the record for the most wins (108).
