  • Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti recently tweaked the team's formation following the departure of Benzema
  • The newly adopted role at the club has seen wideman Rodrygo Goes feature often as a centre forward
  • The Brazilian winger has sent a clear message about his preferred role in a recent interview

Despite La Liga club Real Madrid having an excellent start to the 2023/24 campaign, one underlying problem which has caused Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff problems is the struggle of forward Rodrygo Goes.

The Brazilian winger has faced challenges in adapting to his new role and has scored only one goal in his eleven appearances this season.

Rodrygo's abilities have shone in the past when Ancelotti utilized the traditional 4-3-3 system. However, since the Italian manager switched formations, reported by Football Espana to be due to a lack of a high-profile centre-forward, Rodrygo has often seemed out of place.

In a recent interview, as reported by the Spanish media outlet Relevo, Rodrygo spoke about his preferred role on the field and various other topics.

Rodrygo speaks on his preferred role

The UEFA Champions League winner who had on occasions excelled in his role as a center forward in a 4-3-3 system, said:

"I always made it clear that I have the ability to play on the wings as well as inside. I always said that I don't like to be a nine, and in the end, both at the club and here, I have to do it quite a few times, but I don't like it very much."

Rodrygo's ongoing struggles may be attributed to Ancelotti's persistent use of him as a centre forward. Reports about discontent among Real Madrid's players regarding the team's new formation have surfaced earlier. However, the likelihood of Ancelotti switching formations remains minimal.

Rodrygo backed to shine again

Sports Brief in a previous report stated Rodrygo is having a tough start to the 2023/24 season for Real Madrid, but the La Liga club is solidly behind the Brazilian forward despite his struggles this campaign.

While Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior are hugging the headlines for their performances this season, the 22-year-old forward has managed just one goal in over 800 minutes for Los Blancos.

According to Football Espana, President Florentino Perez still sees Rodrygo with the potential to become one of the best players in the world and has backed him to find his best form again.
