  • Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace to help France punch their ticket to Euro 2024
  • The 24-year-old became France's fourth all-time leading scorer in the process
  • He deviated from his typical goal celebration, choosing to emulate Lionel Messi's iconic style instead

Kylian Mbappe swiftly ended his brief goal-scoring drought with an impressive pair of goals for France on Friday night.

After a five-game spell without finding the net, the Paris Saint-Germain forward found his mojo to spur Les Bleus to a 2-1 triumph over the Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam.

Making the most of a well-executed pass from Olympique Marseille defender Jonathan Clauss, Mbappe struck the opening goal after just seven minutes, as cited by GOAL.

This achievement propelled him to tie with the legendary Michel Platini in France's all-time top scorers' list. Yet, it was his choice of celebration that captured the attention of many.

The 24-year-old, known for joyfully tucking his hands beneath his armpits as noted by Sporting News, instead opted for a Lionel Messi-inspired celebration after scoring the opener by pointing to the sky.

He repeated the same homage after securing a superb goal to double France's lead in the second half.

Here is the video:

Why Mbappe celebrated like Messi?

Mbappe played a pivotal role in France's qualification for Euro 2024, securing both goals in their 2-1 victory against the Netherlands.

His uncharacteristic celebration, recently clarified, involved a poignant gesture. The French captain typically celebrates by folding his arms, but on this occasion, he pointed to the sky as a touching tribute to a family member who had passed away just days prior.

He had been granted permission to leave Claire Fontaine a few days earlier to be with his family. Despite the personal loss, he managed to return in time to join the team for the crucial match in Amsterdam.

Mbappe breaks France goal-scoring record

Sports Brief also reported that the 24-year-old player, who played throughout the entire match, exceeded Michel Platini's record to become the fourth-highest goal scorer in the history of the French national team.

With 42 goals in 72 appearances, the FIFA World Cup 2018's standout performer is now behind only Olivier Giroud (54), Thierry Henry (51), and Antoine Griezmann (44) in his quest to become France's all-time leading goal scorer.

In the upcoming international friendly against Steve Clarke's thriving Scotland team, the former Monaco sensation aims to surpass Griezmann and secure a higher position in the ranks of Les Bleus.
