Stellenbosch FC have added much need bite to their midfield.
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke has been signed on a free transfer and will join the team with immediate effect.
Matsheke had spent last season on loan at Moroka Swallows, having also spent the previous season on loan at Uthongathi FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Stellenbosch currently sit 10th on the DSTV Premiership log, having won three of their nine matches.
The Winelands club have conceded 11 goals in the DSTV Premiership while scoring just nine, prompting coach Steve Barker to look for a player to add stability to his midfield.
In a statement released by Stellenbosch FC, Barker elaborated:
“Darrel adds quality and depth to our midfield positions, specifically as a defensive midfielder."
“He is technically sound, plays with a lot of energy and intensity, and has the ability to break down attacks. Once he has done that he has the ability to then progress the ball either through the quality of his passing or by carrying the ball."
“We welcome him to the SFC family and are confident that he will add much value to our squad.”
Matsheke can also play in the centre of defence but will likely partner or play a backup role for another new Stellenbosch signing, Genino Palace, who has already made seven appearances this season.
Palace was signed from Maritzburg United in July and along with Matsheke, they are among seven new signings at Stellenbosch this season, as listed by FootballTransfers.
