  • Andre Onana's start to life at Manchester United has been far from what he had expected
  • The goalkeeper is conceding an average of almost two goals a game
  • Details have now emerged of how opposition teams have identified his weakness

A new report has now exposed a glaring weakness in Andre Onana's gameplay that opposition teams have exploited so far.

After starring for Inter Milan last season, Onana has struggled to replicate the same form since switching to Manchester United in the summer.

The Red Devils forked out a sum of £51 million to acquire the Cameroon international to replace David de Gea, as Al Jazeera reported.

He has, however, let in goals at an alarming rate. He has conceded 18 goals in the ten games he has played so far, including the three against Galatasaray in their midweek Champions League clash.

Andre Onana's weakness

A report by the Telegraph now indicated that opposition teams have realised that the 27-year-old tends to remain at his post. This makes the goal bigger and gives the player a chance to choose which way they want to place the ball.

An unnamed club advised its players to shoot early at Onana's goal.

The shot-stopper is one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers. But even on this stat alone, he has struggled to cope this season. Stats from Fbref show that of the 245 passes he has attempted (excluding goal kicks), he only has a successful conversion rate of 24.9%.

Some of the goals he has conceded this season include the Mauro Icardi chip, the Leroy Sane shot and Taiwo Awoniyi's counter-attack goal. Goalkeepers are often advised to be a few yards from their line if they can to make the goal smaller for attackers.

Ten Hag defends Onana

This comes at a time when Sports Brief reported that Erik ten Hag launched a passionate defence of Andre Onana in the wake of his costly mistakes in the Champions League.

Speaking after the match, the United boss appeared to absolve his goalkeeper from any blame, adding that he will continue to back him.
