  • Erik ten Hag is staring at an uncertain future as manager of Manchester United
  • The Dutchman has led the Red Devils to their worst start to a season in history
  • United currently sit 10th in the Premier League standings with just nine points

Erik ten Hag's future as Manchester United boss is hanging by a thread following the club's poor start to the new season.

The Dutchman enjoyed an encouraging start to life in his debut with the club last season, helping them seal a third-place finish in the standings as well as win the Carabao Cup.

United's largely successful campaign sparked suggestions that they could challenge for the Premier League title this term under the ex-Ajax boss.

However, that has not been the case, with the Red Devils enduring a disastrous run of form and results across all competitions.

Ten Hag's charges have lost six of their 10 opening games of the campaign, with their most recent setback coming at the hands of Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League.

The Guardian reports that the Turkish giants silenced United 3-2 at Old Trafford during the Group A clash played on Tuesday night.

With just three wins from seven of their Premier League fixtures, United find themselves sitting 10th with nine points, nine behind leaders, Manchester City.

The woeful run of form has sparked speculation that ten Hag could be shown the door, with former United striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic publicly calling for his sacking.

But who could replace the Dutchman should the Premier League giants get rid of him? Sports Brief takes a look at five world-class managers who could succeed the ex-Ajax boss at the Theatre of Dreams.

5. Graham Potter

The former Chelsea boss remains without a job months after he was sacked at Stamford Bridge.

According to Paddy Power, Potter is the fourth favourite to replace ten Hag at Old Trafford.

4. Roberto De Zerbi

Incredibly, De Zerbi, who replaced Potter at Brighton after the Englishman switched to Chelsea, is also on the list of favourites who could take over the Man United job.

The Italian has enjoyed a stellar start to life with the Seagulls, having helped them seal a spot for European football last season.

3. Julian Nagelsmann

Nagelsmann is among the high-profile managers currently unemployed.

The German has been out of work since his sacking at Bayern Munich back in March.

2. Gareth Southgate

Whereas Southgate is seemingly enjoying his current role as the England boss, the rumour mills are still linking him with the Man United role.

1. Zinedine Zidane

The legendary Frenchman remains jobless months after he quit his role at Real Madrid.

The three-time Champions League winner was initially linked with the France national team role. However, he did not land the job, with Didier Deschamps having his deal renewed.

The Old Trafford job could be tempting for Zidane, who boasts a decorative managerial CV.

If ten Hag finds himself unable to turn things around at Man United in short order, it appears more and more likely he will be axed as manager.

Onana blamed again after Galatasaray loss

Sports Brief recently reported on struggling goalkeeper, Andre Onana's howlers in United's loss to Galatasaray.

His poor pass in the second half prompted Casemiro to make a careless tackle in the box, resulting in a red card.

The Cameroonian keeper also could have done much better in stopping Icardi's late winner for the Turkish side.
