  • Andre Onana is having a difficult start to life at Manchester United
  • The Cameroonian joined in the summer to replace David de Gea
  • A former United defender has revealed how Onana can function optimally

A former teammate at Ajax, who also doubles as a former Manchester United player, has told the club how goalkeeper Andre Onana can be made to function optimally.

Onana joined the Red Devils over the summer after helping Inter Milan reach the UEFA Champions League final last season, which they lost to Manchester City.

Fans have long complained about David de Gea's inability to utilise the ball at his feet, which was claimed impeded Erik ten Hag's style of play last season.

As reported by Goal, United paid €55 million including add-ons for the Cameroonian goalkeeper after weeks of transfer negotiation with Inter Milan.

Blind issues Onana advice to United

Onana has not quite settled in well at Old Trafford and has shipped 14 goals in his opening six games, leading to fans' criticism over his goalkeeping.

Daley Blind, his former mate at Ajax, speaking to The Athletic, has advised the club on how the goalie can be made to be at his best.

“He’s one of the great goalkeepers in the world. He has a nonchalance, he’s complete and when he has his head right he can be one of the best goalkeepers. He’s a winner. Always wants to train more. I had a good relationship with him,” he said.

Onana came into United with some section of fans loyal to de Gea waiting with criticism, which has put him under the microscope.

Blind played for United between 2014-2018 before returning to Ajax for a second spell, during which he played with the Cameroonian goalie.

Ten Hag ignored McCarthy's advice

Sports Brief reported that Erik ten Hag ignored Benni McCarthy's advice not to let de Gea leave the club after he kept 17 Premier League clean sheets last season.

The South African trainer advised the boss that it was only a difficult season for the Spanish goalkeeper and he should have been allowed to sign a new contract to redeem himself.
