Italian club Napoli have released an official statement over the TikTok video purportedly mocking Nigerian international Victor Osimhen, but failed to apologise.
Osimhen had missed a penalty during their Serie A match against Bologna over the weekend, as the match ended in a draw.
And two days later, the club shared a video on its TikTok handle, which many had branded as insensitive, offensive, and racist.
The footage met with criticism from football fans and pundits around the world, with the player deleting all Napoli-related pictures on his Instagram handle.
Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, further threatened to take legal action against the Serie A club.
The 24-year-old was on target in their 4-1 win over Udinese but failed to celebrate the goal. Napoli have finally released an official statement about the situation, as per Football Italia:
“Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club.
“As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the Club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad.
“Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision.
“In any case, if Victor perceived any offence towards him, this was not what the club intended.”

Sports Brief earlier reported that Italian television presenter Marika Fruscio descended heavily on Osimhen for deleting all club-related photos and videos from his Instagram account.
The club, in a now-deleted video, shared a post on TikTok with sounds making jokes about the striker for his penalty miss.
The Italian champions received massive criticism for the post, but Fruscio took to social media to accuse the forward of being unprofessional for taking down all his Napoli-related posts.
