  • Bruno Fernandes, Virgil Van Dijk, and Martin Odegaard are also among the best-paid captains

Martin Odegaard has climbed up the ladder of the best-paid captains in the Premier League after he recently landed a new deal at Arsenal.

The Norwegian midfielder penned a new contract with the Gunners last Friday that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2028.

According to Sky Sports, Odegaard signed the five-year deal nearly two years after he sealed a permanent move to Arsenal from Real Madrid after an initial loan spell with the north Londoners.

GiveMeSport claims that the Norway international is now pocketing an eyewatering £240,000 per week after he landed the new bumper contract.

The massive wages have him ranking among the best-paid captains in the Premier League.

Kevin De Bruyne tops list

However, Odegaard is still trailing Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne on the best earners list.

De Bruyne, who became City's new captain after the departure of Ilkay Gundogan, is the highest-earning captain in the English top flight.

The Belgian is understood to be on a £400,000 weekly wage, nearly double what his closet challenger, Reece James, earns.

James, who was handed the armband at Stamford Bridge in the summer, is pocketing around £250,000 at his boyhood club.

The Englishman was named the Blues' new captain after the exit of long-serving defender Cesar Azpilicueta, who joined Atletico Madrid.

Who are the other top-earning captains?

Meanwhile, Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes is also among the top-earning skippers in the Premier League.

However, the Portuguese playmaker ranks behind De Bruyne, James, and Odegaard.

Fernandes is believed to be on £240,000-a-week wages at Old Trafford.

Be that as it may, the wages have him ranking ahead of Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, who sits fifth in the charts.

Here are the top 10 best-paid captains in the Premier League (wages per week):

10. Seamus Coleman - Everton - £55,000

Arteta explains Rice substitution

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta has explained the reason behind Declan Rice's strange substitution during the North London derby.

Rice, who has enjoyed a bright start to life at the Emirates since his summer move, was part of the Gunners' starting XI as they hosted rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, September 24.

However, the England international could not last the entire 90 minutes of the tie, as he had to be subbed off in the first half.
