  • Chelsea have been the busiest club in the transfer market since Todd Boehly took over
  • There has been a spate of outgoings and incomings, with over £1bn spent on transfers
  • This is set to continue in the January transfer window, with the club prepared to sell some more players

Chelsea's activity in the transfer market is not reflected in the results, as the Blues languish in 14th place after the opening six games of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Their business in the transfer market is set to continue in the January window, with the possibility of more departures than incomings as they try to raise funds after over £1bn spent.

Sports Brief looks at five players who could be set for an exit at Stamford Bridge in January.

1. Trevoh Chalobah

The academy graduate was close to leaving the club in the summer when the club accepted a £30m offer from Nottingham Forest, but the player turned down the move after seeing a deal to Bayern Munich collapse, as noted by Daily Express. One of the two clubs could attempt to sign him again in January.

2. Marc Cucurella

Todd Boehly was Chelsea's acting sporting director in his first window as owner. He spent over £250m during the summer, and Spanish full-back Marc Cucurella was one of those he signed. He has struggled to settle in and was close to joining Manchester United, but a deal could not be reached, as reported by The Athletic. He could be on the move in January.

3. Conor Gallagher

Another academy star the club was willing to let go of in the summer, but he insisted on staying and fighting for his place in his team. He has been a regular face in Mauricio Pochettino's team and captained the team in the last two games. The club are not closing the door on letting him go anytime if the right price arrives.

4. Ian Maatsen

According to Evening Standard, the Blues had a loan bid with an obligation to buy for £31.5m from Burnley, but the player did not fancy returning to the club he spent last season on loan with. Maatsen has seen limited minutes in the opening games and could push for an exit in January.

5. Thiago Silva

Yes, you read that right. The Brazilian veteran has been a subject of criticism in the opening games, and Pochettino has been accused of lacking the guts to drop him despite his drop in form. By January, he'd have six months left on his contract and could go as he eyes a return to his native Brazil.

5 things Pochettino is getting wrong

Sports Brief analysed five things Pochettino is getting wrong as Chelsea are plunged into early season struggle with just one win in six games and five points.

Porch guided the Blues to an unbeaten pre-season but has ditched the system that worked while opting to incorrectly profile players and play some of them out of position, wearing out the patience of the fans.
