The 7th edition of the National Youth Games is ongoing in Asaba, Delta State, but the competition has been met with criticism due to its treatment of the athletes representing each state.

Thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with no fewer than 4,500 athletes are participating in the youth sports fiesta, which was declared open by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a few days ago.

The competition will feature 35 sports as athletes battle for medals in each category.

According to reports by SaharaReporters, the athletes from each state are not being treated properly since the beginning of the competition.

Pictures uploaded by the Nigerian media company on their official page on X showed the bad state of the mattresses the athletes are sleeping on.

It was also confirmed that three states shared one toilet, which is not hygienic enough for athletes.

It was earlier confirmed that some athletes and officials travelling to Asaba for the games were left with no option but to pass the night on the Benin by-pass traffic logjam due to the poor situation of the road, according to the Guardian.

Sports to feature at the Games include athletics, basketball, chess, cricket, football, golf, handball, judo, scrabble, Taekwondo, and volleyball.

Delta State government reacts to stadium collapse

Sports Brief earlier reported that the government of Delta State denied reports that made the rounds last year indicating that three persons lost their lives after a section of the Stephen Keshi Stadium collapsed.

Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Information in the state and the Media Committee of the Local Organising Committee for Delta 2022 National Sports Festival, said the information about the incident was untrue.

Aniagwu said that contrary to reports that three persons were killed in the incident, only one person sustained a minor injury, and the victim was treated.
