Mamelodi Sundowns equalled Kaizer Chiefs’ 18-year record in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after their clash against Orlando Pirates on September 20.

Masandawana defeated the Buccaneers 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night. Brazilian star, Lucas Ribeiro scored the only goal of the game as Sundowns maintained their perfect start to the new season.

The win against Orlando Pirates also saw Sundowns record a 31-game run of successive wins, according to iDiski Times. They were last defeated in the league in September 2022 against Supersport United.

Rulani Mokwena’s side has picked up 25 wins and six draws to match the record set by Kaizer Chiefs almost two decades ago.

The Amakhosi set a record in 2005 in a run started under the late Ted Dumitru and finished by Ernst Middendorp. However, the success rates of the two teams are clearly different.

Chiefs picked up 15 wins and 16 draws to write their name into the league’s history books. Sundowns now have the opportunity to move ahead if they avoid defeat in their next game.

Masandawana's next game will be against Stellenbosch FC next Wednesday, September 27, at Loftus Versfeld.

Stellies will be motivated ahead of the game since they are the only team to have defeated Sundowns since Mokwena took over the club. That defeat came in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final in April this year.

Meanwhile, the reigning Premier Soccer League champions will aim to snuff that hope out this time around.

Mokwena reveals secret to stopping Pirates

Sports Brief previously reported on Mokwena revealing Sundowns' plans for Pirates as he explained his understanding of grassroots football.

The coach of Masandawana said that knowledge had helped him profile star opposition players like Patrick Maswanganyi and Zakhele Lepasa.

Heading into their clash on Wednesday, the duo were the most in-form players for the Pirates but were caged as Sundowns secured a narrow 1-0 win.
