Former Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has failed to qualify the Cheetahs of Benin Republic for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Mozambique.

Benin Republic needed a win to seal second place ahead of Mozambique, but a late goal from the Mambas knocked Rohr's side out of the competition.

Benin Republic finished third in Group L, with defending Champions Senegal finishing first, while Rwanda finished bottom.

Rohr named a strong side to face the Mambas at home, and his team took the lead through former Huddersfield striker, Steve Mounie.

The home team equalised seven minutes later with a stunning strike from Witi, before taking the lead four minutes later through Guima.

The Cheetahs drew level five minutes after the break, through Sochaux midfielder Jodel Dossou.

Mozabimque sealed a stunning victory with a goal from Honka forward Clesio Bauque in added time.

It was a heartbreaking evening for Rohr and his team, as the Mambas returned to the AFCON after an 11-year absence, according to reports in This Day Live.

Mozambique will be making their fifth appearance in the competition next year, with the hope of reaching the next round for the first time in the tournament's history.

Rohr signs three-year Benin deal

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Super Eagles gaffer, Gernot Rohr has signed a three-year deal with the Benin Football Association as the new coach of their national team, ahead of the next Africa Cup of Nations.

Following the sacking of Michel Dussuyer, who failed to see the country through to qualification for AFCON 2021, Moussa Latoundji was hired in an interim capacity as the team's caretaker manager.

Rohr was with the Super Eagles from 2016 to 2021 before he was sacked by the former Nigerian football board, which was led by Amaju Pinnick.
