  • Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in the summer for £35m
  • The World Cup winner's move was jailed as the bargain of the summer by fans
  • He has now opened up on why he chose Anfield as his destination

Alexis Mac Allister has opened up on why he joined Liverpool, and the reason appeared to aim a dig at former teammate Moises Caicedo, who joined Chelsea.

Mac Allister enjoyed a breakout season with Brighton last year and was part of the victorious Argentina team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, headed by Lionel Scaloni.

Clubs swarmed around for his signature in January, but he opted to stay at the AMEX Stadium but made it clear to the club that he should be allowed to leave in the summer if a substantial bid arrives.

As reported by BBC Sports, the 24-year-old chose Anfield as his destination, and the Reds paid £35m to Brighton, a fee that could rise to £55m, considered a bargain considering the Seagulls' history.

Mac Allister on why he chose Liverpool

The World Cup winner had many top clubs interested in him, including Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, and his decision to join the Reds appeared unclear to many fans.

Speaking exclusively to TNT Sports, he has detailed why the move to the Northwest club was more appealing.

“It was easy because the club and the manager made it easy because from the first moment, they showed a real desire for me and that was so important because in football, money is a big thing, but sometimes it's not the biggest thing,” he said.
"The manager, the club showed a real desire, real interest, and I'm really grateful for that.”

His comments about money appear like a subliminal message to former teammate Moises Caicedo, who sealed a British record £115m move to Chelsea, despite Liverpool having a £111m agreement with Brighton first.

Why Mac Allister chose 10

Sports Brief reported that Alexis Mac Allister chose number 10 because he did not want to wear the number, which was made legendary by Steven Gerrard.

The Argentine instead chose number 10, which is also a legendary number at the club worn by John Barnes and, most recently, Senegalese forward Sadio Mane.
