Manchester City Legend Yaya Toure Named AFCON 2023 Ambassador

Former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure has been named as an ambassador for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.

The 40-year-old was announced as an ambassador for the tournament at a short ceremony in Abidjan on Monday.

Toure was joined by other former Ivory Coast players, including ex-Swansea City forward Wilfried Bony, as faces of the tournament.

Now the assistant coach of Belgium outfit Standard Liege, Toure led the Ivorians to AFCON success in 2015, when they beat Ghana in the final on penalties.

"I am very proud to be an ambassador for AFCON in 2024 held in my beautiful country, Ivory Coast. I was so proud to lift the AFCON trophy in 2015 and now it is a great honour to help welcome those from around Africa and the world to my country," Toure posted on social media.

Toure is an icon in Ivory Coast, having won the African Player of the Year four times. He was also part of the Barcelona team that won the 2009 UEFA Champions League.

All 24 teams for the tournament in January and February next year have been confirmed after the end of the qualifiers last week, as reported by cafonline.com.

Cameroon qualify for AFCON 2023

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Besiktas star, Vincent Aboubakar played an inspiring role as five-time African champions Cameroon sealed a spot at next year's tournament after beating Burundi in a must-win game in Garoua.

The veteran forward sealed victory for his side with a thunderous strike as the Indomitable Lions beat Burundi 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Cameroon almost missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast after defeat in their penultimate game against Namibia recently.

Ghana beat CAR, qualify for AFCON 2023

Ernest Nuamah climbed off the bench to score the winner as the Black Stars came from a goal down to beat the Central African Republic and qualify for AFCON 2023.

Mohammed Kudus cancelled an early strike from Louis Mafouta as Ghana went into the break level.

The visitors got off to a great start, winning the first corner of the game in the 6th minute, but failed to take advantage of the set-piece.
