  • Nagelsmann is still contracted to Bayern Munich despite being sacked in March

Julian Nagelsmann could return to management months after being sacked by Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in March, with the Germany national team job available.

The 36-year-old manager has emerged top on the shortlist of managers being lined up by the German FA to replace sacked coach Hansi Flick, who was relieved of his post.

According to GOAL, Flick was sacked by the German FA on Sunday after a humiliating defeat at the hands of Japan in an international friendly, suffering a 4-1 loss to the Asian heavyweights.

The loss to Japan was Germany’s third in a row, the team’s worst run since 1985, which has prompted the German FA to draw up a list of famous coaches to whom they are ready to offer the job.

Former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal and Zinedine Zidane have also been touted as possible managers being targeted by the Germany FA for the vacant national team job.

Bayern to demand compensation for Nagelsmann

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are likely to demand compensation in the region of €10-15 million from Germany if they are keen on offering Julian Nagelsmann the vacant job, SB Nation reports.

The 36-year-old manager still has a running contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions until 2026, despite being sacked in March, with Thomas Tuchel taking over the reins at Allianz Arena.

It is questionable whether Nagelsmann would even decide to join a national team at this stage of his career. Still, with no other option on the table, the ex-Bayern boss could consider switching to taking up a national team post.

German football in crisis after Flick’s sacking

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that nine months before hosting Euro 2024, Germany have sacked manager Hansi Flick, the latest in a series of setbacks for the once-proud football nation.

Flick received his marching orders on Sunday, becoming the first head coach in German history to get the sack.

The termination came after a 4-1 defeat by Japan in Wolfsburg, the team's fourth loss in six matches since their embarrassing group-stage exit at the Qatar World Cup.
