Kepa Arrizabalaga is enjoying a fine start to his Real Madrid career, but the Spanish goalkeeper could have ended up in Germany as a goalkeeper for Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old joined Los Blancos on loan from Chelsea after first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois suffered a season-ending injury by tearing his ACL in training.

According to GOAL, Kepa has now revealed he was close to joining Bayern Munich after having a call with Thomas Tuchel before Real Madrid hijacked the deal at the last minute.

"Thomas Tuchel called me. We were close to going to Munich. I felt it was time for a change of scenery. I wanted to stay, but I felt that the project was not the right one... When Madrid calls you, everything changes. My signing was closed in just a few hours and a couple of calls."

Kepa has conceded just two goals in his first four games for Real Madrid and looks set to remain the club’s first-choice ahead of Andrey Lunin.

Kepa takes brutal swipe at Chelsea

Meanwhile, Kepa claimed he left Chelsea this summer because he thought he needed a change of scenery and had become tired of Todd Boehly's supposed project at Stamford Bridge, The Sun reports.

The Spanish goalkeeper failed to hit the heights required in London, losing his number-one spot to former Blues goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy before reclaiming it towards the end of last season.

Kepa said he did not have to second-guess leaving the struggling Premier League side and provided a veiled criticism of the spending spree undertaken by Chelsea's management.

Real Madrid sign Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Real Madrid swiftly replacing Thibaut Courtois, who suffered an ACL injury in training last weekend, by signing Kepa.

With the Belgian veteran reported to be out for most of the 2023/24 season, the Spanish side signed the Spanish Chelsea keeper on a season-long loan.

Kepa was also a target for Bayern Munich but he chose Real Madrid, being expected to take over as the first choice due to his experience at the top level.
