  • The former Red Devils forward returned to football after assault charges against him were dropped
  • The England forward has begun training with his new La Liga side despite the continued controversy

Former Manchester United prodigy, Mason Greenwood has trained for the first time with his new club, Getafe, following his 18-month hiatus from football.

The 21-year-old England international was arrested in January 2022 over charges including assault and coercive behaviour, alleged to involve his girlfriend.

Despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping the charges in February this year, Manchester United and Greenwood agreed to part ways after the conclusion of the club's own internal investigation, according to a report by Sky Sports.

Amid the talk of wasted potential, the young forward received a surprise pathway to another lease at life as a professional footballer, following a deadline day offering from Getafe.

In a surprising twist of circumstances, the La Liga club announced the loan deal for the forward just minutes before the summer transfer window deadline.

According to a report by Marca, Man United will receive no loan fee and will cover the majority of his £75,000-per-week wage during his time in Spain.

Greenwood, who signed a one-year straight loan deal, was spotted in team training earlier today. It is expected he will be subjected to intense physical training, given his lengthy layoff from footballing activities.

The striker, who has so far been showered with love and admiration from the Getafe fans, could be in line to make his debut for the Madrid-based club in round four of the league when Osasuna visits the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Meanwhile, as Sports Brief reported, a Spanish domestic abuse charity has called on the Spanish club to reverse their choice of signing Greenwood, saying the signing is 'setting a terrible example'.

How fans reacted to Greenwood's return

Sports Brief also reported on fans having mixed reactions to Greenwood's return after Man United released a statement claiming he would continue his career away at Old Trafford.

Some lines of the presser did not sit well with fans, who believe non-conviction does not mean 'not guilty' and called out the club for insinuating that the striker had committed no offence.
