Sergio Ramos has confessed that it would have been pointless to go anywhere else after the veteran Spanish defender agreed to join his boyhood club for the second time in his professional career.
The 37-year-old defender, a free agent since leaving Pars Saint-Germain this summer, had mega offers from Saudi Arabia, Major League Soccer and Turkey but will now return to the team he left 18 years ago.
According to Football Espana, Ramos expressed how delighted he is returning to Sevilla and revealed that it was a debt he owed to his grandfather and father, who were both die-hard supporters of the Andalusian club.
“It would have been pointless going anywhere else, without coming back here to play first. I think it was a debt to my grandfather, to my father, to Sevillismo, to Puerta and many things that have meant a lot. I think it was time. We’ll leave the rest for later.”
Ramos spent two seasons in Sevilla's senior team at the start of his professional career before joining Madrid, where he went on to win four UEFA Champions League titles.
Ramos snubs lucrative Al-Ittihad offer
Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos has declined a reunion with former teammate Karim Benzema after turning down a mega offer from Saudi Pro League reigning champions Al Ittihad, GOAL reports.
The Spanish defender and Benzema played a key role in the recent success of Los Blancos, going on to win multiple trophies together at the Spanish club before Ramos’ departure in 2021.
Benzema would leave a year later to join the Saudi Pro League club but has failed to convince his former Real Madrid teammate to join him in the Middle East after Ramos agreed to a short-term deal with Sevilla.
