Nottingham Forest have lodged a written complaint to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body in charge of refereeing in the Premier League, after a controversial loss to Manchester United over the weekend.
Several refereeing decisions went against Forest’s way last Saturday, causing them to lose 3-2 at Old Trafford.
It was a gut-wrenching defeat for Forest, who scored two quick goals in the first four minutes to build a 2-0 lead.
Attwell's controversial calls doom Forest
That advantage soon vanished after United benefited from referee Stuart Attwell’s calls in the match.
Forest were reduced to ten men in the 67th minute after he sent off Joe Worrall for a last-man foul, per The Mirror.
Attwell then awarded a contentious penalty to United minutes later for Danilo’s foul on Marcus Rashford.
Bruno Fernandes made no mistake with the ensuing spot kick, giving United the lead for good in the 76th minute.
VAR didn’t come to Forest’s rescue in either of those calls. Official Robert Jones did not overturn either of Attwell’s decisions or ask him to watch the aforementioned incidents at the pitchside monitor.
Forest blast officiating after loss
Forest manager Steve Cooper talked about Attwell’s calls during his post-match press conference, saying:
“You need things to go your way. I’m biting my tongue to be honest in terms of what I really feel because they are defining moments.”
Cooper added that he was surprised at how quickly decisions were made during the match, saying:
Andre Onana breaks silence on controversial Wolverhampton penalty claim
Football“You tend to see referees take a bit more time, particularly at the top level. Of course, there was a decision to be made. I was just surprised how quickly the officials… it was split-second stuff.”
Nottingham Forest have since sent an email to PGMOL to question the controversial decisions at Old Trafford with owner Evangelos Marinakis the one encouraging the club to address their concerns to Howard Webb, the refereeing body’s chief, per The Telegraph.
