It has emerged that Lionel Messi broke MLS rules after finding the back of the net during his league debut for Inter Miami.

Messi has been in sensational form since joining the Florida-based side in the summer after he brought to an end his illustrious European career.

However, he had to wait until Saturday to make his league debut for his new side, with the majority of his previous appearances for the club coming in cup competitions.

The Mirror reports that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's first bow came against the New York Red Bulls, in a tie Gerardo Martino's men managed to secure a 2-0 win.

Messi breaks MLS rules

It now seems that Messi broke MLS guidelines during his side's victory during the tie.

According to AP, all players, including Messi, must be available for media duties post-match.

This was not the case for the Barcelona legend, who is understood to have not spoken to any reporter after the match.

Inter Miami spokeswoman Molly Dreska had, however, made it known that the World Cup winner would not be available for any media duties.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami will be back in action on Thursday, August 30, when they will take on Nashville, in another league fixture.

Messi nets goal on MLS debut

Despite the controversy, Messi scored on his MLS debut for Inter Miami with a close-range strike in the 89th minute against the New York Red Bulls, Sports Brief reported.

Benjamin Cremaschi found the Argentine with a cross after the latter made a great run inside the box, in a fantastic team goal which started with a superb pass by Jordi Alba to his captain.

Messi maniacs storm New York

Meanwhile, soccer fans in the United States watched Messi score at Times Square on his MLS debut for Inter Miami in the game against the New York Red Bulls.

As Sports Brief reported, he scored a close-range strike in the 89th minute to seal the 2-0 win, with fans celebrating as the Herons claimed a victory.
