- Although he did not get his name on the scoresheet, he was adjudged the man of the match after his superlative performance
Lamine Yamal received a standing ovation from Villarreal fans following his electric performance for Barcelona in their seven-goal thriller at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
The 16-year-old prodigy repaid the confidence reposed in him by manager Xavi Hernandez with a sterling display as Barca clawed from 3-2 down to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2023-24 season.
Deployed on the left flank, Lamine produced a well-timed cross for Gavi, who made no mistake to break the game's deadlock after 12 minutes.
His assist will earn him a place in the history books of La Liga, becoming the youngest player to register a La Liga assist in the 21st century, per ESPNFC.
He did not stop from there as he played a starring role in spearheading Barca's rally from 3-2 down. While Ferran Torres scored the equalizer, it was Lamine's effort that came off the foot of the post, which served as the catalyst for the match-winner.
Yamal's effort, which kissed the foot of the post, fell kindly to Robert Lewandowski, who planted the ball at the back of the net to seal the dramatic win.
Shortly after being involved in Barcelona's fourth goal, he was subbed off by coach Xavi. While heading to the bench, he was treated to a rousing standing ovation from fans of Villarreal, who appreciated the youngster's display.
His treatment by Villarreal fans was similar to that given to club legend Ronaldinho following his dazzling display against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu in 2005.
