"I know him very well": Gerrard Makes Bold Ronaldo Claim Ahead of His First Game As Coach in Saudi
Football'One Club Wonder': When Inter Miami's Beckham Aimed Subtle Dig at Messi In Favour of Ronaldo
- Lionel Messi was once mocked as a 'one-club wonder' for his long stay at Barcelona
- This view was also once expressed by his new Inter Miami employer David Beckham
- Messi's Disney-like performance with the MLS franchise is fast eroding those claims
Lionel Messi's claim as the greatest of all time (GOAT) has often met fierce counter-arguments, with many suggesting he was a 'one-club wonder' including Inter Miami co-owner, David Beckham.
While this is valid to some extent, this perspective also serves to highlight Messi's dominant presence at FC Barcelona, where he spent two-thirds of his illustrious career.
Over 21 years, Messi became the club's all-time appearance leader and record goal-scorer, netting 672 times in 778 games, per Transfermarkt. Yet, in 2021, financial turmoil at Barca abruptly ended this divine union.
Now, at 36, Messi is on the verge of securing an eighth Ballon d'Or award, thriving during his two-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain and in his current venture with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
His stellar performances in the United States swiftly dispel the notion of him being a 'one-club wonder'.
When Beckham backed Ronaldo over Messi
Interestingly, before Messi's respective moves to PSG and Inter Miami, David Beckham weighed in on the perennial debate between Messi and his famed rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
He expressed this viewpoint in an old video where the Manchester United legend responds to a question about which of the two veterans he would prefer to have in the MLS.
"Cristiano's career has been incredible, and Leo [Messi] has been, you know, a one-club wonder," he said in a video circulating on social media.
Messi defies Ferguson's 'one-club' theory
Sports Brief previously reported on Messi's consistent standout performances in the USA dispelling reservations many people once had about the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.
This shift in thinking also includes legendary Man United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who shared the same viewpoint when comparing Messi's career to Ronaldo.
Kane eyes immediate silverware after Bayern switch
FootballMerely a month into his MLS journey, Messi is revolutionising Inter Miami's destiny, propelling his team to their first club final in history after only six appearances for the Florida franchise.
Messi inspires Inter Miami to final
Messi helped Inter Miami force extra time against FC Cincinnati, delivering two assists to Leonardo Campana in the second half of their U.S. Open Cup semi-final showdown, Sports Brief also reported.
The Argentine helped set up these goals in the 68th and 90th minutes to make the game 2-2 for Inter Miami, with the Herons completing their comeback in the shootout to reach yet another cup final.
