German football legend, Lothar Matthaus has suggested that Bayern Munich may have felt compelled to pay a premium for their marquee signing, Harry Kane.
In a club record-breaking deal, Bayern Munich splurged a staggering €100 million to secure Kane's services, fulfilling a long-standing desire of coach Thomas Tuchel.
The Bundesliga champions eventually secured their primary target after navigating through complicated and protracted negotiations.
These talks even resulted in the delay of the England captain's planned flight to Munich as both parties hashed out the contractual details.
Despite Kane's reputation as a proven striker, Matthaus contends that his former club may have, somewhat unfairly, paid an excessive fee for the Englishman, who departed Tottenham as the club's all-time leading scorer, according to talkSPORT.
Speaking about the transfer, Matthaus told reporters, as quoted by Daily Post, “…Maybe Bayern has also – in quotation marks – been a little blackmailed by Tottenham. Another million more and a little bit more. They wanted this player.
“And I say: 100 million for a 30-year-old – Lewandowski was three years older when he left and went to Barcelona for around €50 million – I now assume that it will pay off.”
Kane scores on Bundesliga debut
Contrary to Matthaus' assertions, Kane made a resounding impact in his starting debut, contributing with a goal and an assist as Bayern Munich secured a convincing 4-0 victory on the road against Werder Bremen.
Kane wasted no time, providing the assist for Leroy Sane's opening goal just three minutes into the match before finding the back of the net himself in the middle of the second half.
Touted as the vital piece of the puzzle for Bayern, especially in the absence of the departed Robert Lewandowski, Kane showcased exceptional link-up play during his Bundesliga debut.

In his maiden start for the team, the former Tottenham striker was pivotal in elevating his new side to a commanding two-goal advantage.
The stellar performance of the 30-year-old striker, who featured for 84 minutes for the Bavarians, has drawn plaudits from his teammate and captain.
