  • Lionel Messi helped Inter Miami beat Nashville SC to win the 2023 Leagues Cup
  • As he usually does, he shared moments with rival players after the game and exchanged his shirt
  • The player he exchanged shirts with found out what was acceptable in his home and what was not

Insult was added to injury for a Nashville SC midfielder after finding out Lionel Messi's stuff is not accepted in his home following his Leagues Cup defeat to Inter Miami.

Messi helped Inter Miami to the 2023 Leagues Cup victory in his first seven games at the club, scoring 10 goals, including a final goal and the first penalty in the shootout against Nashville SC.

It was the 44th trophy of Messi's career, surpassing Dani Alves' 43 and becoming the most decorated footballer of all time on top of winning the tournament's best player and top scorer.

Since he moved to the United States, he barely had the privilege of returning to the locker room with his match-worn jersey as he exchanged it on request from opponents, but the aftermath of the recent one was unexpected.

Nashville star's wife rejects request

As spotted by Sportskeeda, he exchanged shirts with midfielder Dax McCarthy in the tunnel after winning the cup competition.

The overjoyed McCarthy uploaded three pictures from the night on his Instagram page and requested to frame Messi's jersey and hang it over their bed from his wife.

The request was met with rejection as the wife responded, "No chance that's happening," leaving the player utterly disappointed. He'd probably learn to deal with such issues privately next time.

Messi to start against Cincinnati

Miami's next game after their triumph will come against Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati in the US Open Cup semi-final, where head coach Tata Martino confirmed Messi will start despite acknowledging he needs rest.

“Clearly, Wednesday is not going to be that day. You know how he is and that he loves playing and participating. So as long as he doesn't mention anything to me, he'll stay on the pitch,” he told MLS Soccer.

Should Miami overcome Cincinnati, they'll play one of Houston Dynamo or Real Salt Lake in the final on September 27.

Messi's classy gesture to Yedlin

Sports Brief reported that Messi displayed a classy gesture towards DeAndre Yedlin during the Leagues Cup trophy lift.

The 2022 World Cup winner immediately replaced the American defender as captain when he joined the club but passed him the armband to lift the trophy together.
