Mamelodi Sundowns have a habit of breaking records.

The reigning DStv Premiership champions have dominated South African football in recent years and have broken many records in the process.

As noted by SuperSport, the Brazilians already hold the records for most wins in a season, most wins in succession, most home wins in a 30-game season, and most goals in a season, to name a few.

The reigning champions are now closing in on another major record and are looking to add more misery to Kaizer Chiefs at the same time.

The Brazilians are closing in on the record for having the longest unbeaten run in the league, a record which the Amakhosi set in 2004/ 05.

Chiefs went a total of 31 games without losing before Platinum Stars eventually ended it. Sundowns are currently unbeaten in 28 games.

Who do Sundowns play next?

To beat the record, Sundowns will have to win or draw their next four fixtures. In the form they are currently in, that is very possible.

Masandawana next face Richards Bay on August 23, before taking on Polokwane City a week later. They then play Orlando Pirates before taking on Stellenbosch.

The Buccaneers could pose the biggest threat to Sundowns’ record hopes, but the defending champions will be confident that they can get one over the Soweto side.

Sundowns break 2 more records

No team had ever won the DStv Premiership in April before.

No team had also sealed the title with seven matches to go in a league campaign.

Mamelodi Sundowns now hold these records following their sixth consecutive Premier Soccer League triumph and record-extending 13th, Sports Brief reported.

Sundowns dominate Premier Soccer League

Mamelodi Sundowns fans are still raving about their team winning their fifth consecutive DStv Premiership title, Sports Brief previously reported.

While other clubs find excuses for Masandawana’s dominance, the numbers and stats from their season thus far don’t lie.

Sundowns won their fifth league title in a row and secured their 12th league title since the PSL era began in 1996.
