Atletico Madrid star, Memphis Depay, has revealed that his dance celebration in La Liga opener against Granada, was in honour of the King of Ashantis in Ghana, Otumuo Osei Tutu II.
The Dutch forward scored a stunning long range goal as the Rojiblancos defeated Granada 3-1 at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Monday night.
Depay was spotted performing a new dance celebration, which saw him throw his hands from right to left before majestically hitting his chest.
The dance known as Kete is a popular Ghanaian cultural performance by the Ashantis in Ghana. It is usually performed at special celebrations of the King of Ashanti.
And according to Depay, he dedicated his goal to the Otumfuo in honour of what he represents to Ghana, where his father hails from.
"The dance is from the Ashanti Kingdom in Ghana and it's paying respect to our king,” Depay told La Liga TV.
“He has a dance as well where ‘he takes, as I give’ and he takes and the kingdom is his. I have the privilege to know the king and that was a celebration for him and obviously celebrating with the team and the fans is a great feeling.”
Depay is expected to lead the line when Atletico Madrid travel to Real Betis in their second game of the season, as reported by as.com.

Depay reconciles with Ghanaian father
Atletico Madrid forward Memphis Depay seems to have ironed out his differences with his Ghanaian father after sharing a photo of his dad on social media.
The Dutch-born Ghanaian also attached an emotional and inspiring message to the post, reflecting on the relationship with his father.
The former Barcelona player is reported to have dropped his surname due to the experiences he had growing up with out a father figure.
