“I’m a Pure Yoruba Man”: Togolese Legend Emmanuel Adebayor Finally Opens Up on His Origin

Togolese legend and former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has disclosed that he is a Yoruba man from Nigeria.

Adebayor represented the Sparrow Hawks of Togo during his playing days, making a record 88 appearances and scoring 32 goals.

He visited Nigeria as other African legends also turned up for mercurial midfielder Jay Jay Okocha, who clocked 50 on August 14.

While interacting with fans in Lagos, Adebayor opened up that he remains a Nigerian despite representing Togo internationally during his active years.

The 39-year-old told TVC, as per Daily Post:

“My father’s name is Adeyi Adebayor, and my mother’s name is Alice Eniola Adekanye. So, I am a pure Yoruba man. I was just born in Togo, grew up in Togo and raised by Nigerian parents in Togo, but I am fully from Nigeria.”

The former African Player of the Year was in Nigeria to participate in the novelty match organised by African football legends in honour of former Super Eagles captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha, who recently turned 50.

Adebayor hails Okocha

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Adebayor penned an emotional birthday note to Nigerian legend, Jay Jay Okocha, who turned 50 on August 14, 2023.

Born in 1973, Okocha is celebrating his golden jubilee birthday with some of the finest footballers to ever emerge from the African continent.

The former Manchester City striker took to his Instagram page to pen a birthday message to the former Super Eagles captain, saying Jay Jay is a true legend.

Thomas Partey hails Adebayor

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey believes former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor will be remembered by fans of the club for his celebration against the Gunners at the Etihad.

Adebayor spent three years at Arsenal, playing 104 matches and scoring 46 goals for the Gunners before moving to Manchester City in 2009.

During his time at City in the 2009/10 campaign, the Togo legend scored against his former club and celebrated wildly in front of Arsenal fans at the Etihad.
