  • Thibaut Courtois departed from Real Madrid's training session in tears
  • The goalkeeper is set to undergo a surgical procedure in the near future
  • Andriy Lunin, the Ukrainian international, stands as the sole remaining goalkeeper in the squad

Real Madrid goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois had to be carried off the training field on Thursday due to a torn ACL, and he is scheduled to undergo surgery for the injury.

Since joining Madrid in 2018, Courtois has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

In the previous season, under Carlo Ancelotti's management, he achieved a tally of ten clean sheets in La Liga, despite his team ultimately finishing behind Barcelona in the championship race.

Given Courtois' projected absence for a considerable portion of the 2023/24 season, Ancelotti will be compelled to assess alternative choices in the goalkeeping position.

Although Real Madrid have Andriy Lunin as a substitute, doubts about the 24-year-old Ukrainian's abilities persist among manager Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching team.

Despite being listed for sale over the summer, it's anticipated that Lunin will continue with the club until his contract ends next year, particularly given Courtois' current unavailability.

It is said that Ancelotti is inclined towards delving into the transfer market to secure a primary goalkeeper instead of depending on Lunin.

Here are five shot-stoppers Los Blancos could sign to replace the Belgian number one.

David de Gea

Considering his extensive expertise accumulated over his long-standing tenure at Manchester United, de Gea presents himself as a viable contender.

With his remarkable shot-stopping abilities, quick reflexes, and vast experience in top-flight football, de Gea could provide the kind of reassurance that Real Madrid needs during Courtois' absence.

His proficiency in handling high-pressure situations and commanding his defensive line might offer the stability required at the back, per Talk Sport.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Another candidate is Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has been plying his trade at Chelsea. Despite some ups and downs in his career, Kepa possesses excellent distribution skills and is known for his composure on the ball.

His familiarity with the demanding nature of the Premier League could also translate into a strong presence in La Liga.

Yassine Bounou

Yassine Bounou, often known as Bono, has showcased his mettle at Sevilla. Bono has consistently impressed with his acrobatic saves, sound decision-making, and ability to organize his defence effectively.

His standout performances in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League have proven his capability to thrive in high-stakes encounters, which could make him a dependable stand-in for Courtois.

Keylor Navas

Keylor Navas, no stranger to Real Madrid fans, is also in line to replace Courtois. The Costa Rican has a proven track record with Los Blancos, having played a pivotal role in their Champions League successes. His agility, leadership, and familiarity with the club's playing style could offer a seamless transition in Courtois' absence.

Diogo Costa

Costa has emerged as an ideal contender for the position. Madrid Xtra reported.

He is a skilled goalkeeper with excellent ball-playing abilities and a knack for commanding aerial situations.

The Portuguese has a safe pair of hands and also demonstrates remarkable accuracy in his long-ball distribution. Acquiring his talents won't come cheap for Madrid, as his contract boasts a hefty €75 million release clause.

Each of these goalkeepers presents a unique blend of skills and experience. While Courtois' shoes are undoubtedly tough to fill, Real Madrid can take solace in the fact that they have a talented pool of keepers who can step up and contribute effectively during his recovery.

Madrid rocked by Courtois injury

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid suffered a huge blow on the eve of the new La Liga season, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during training on Thursday.

The 31-year-old Belgium international faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines and will undergo surgery in the coming days, his club said.
