  • Inter Miami have terminated the contract of goalkeeper Nick Marsman

  • He made 29 appearances for Inter Miami since joining the MLS club in 2021

Nick Marsman is no longer an Inter Miami player.

The Herons have cancelled the contract of the 32-year-old goalkeeper months after he questioned Lionel Messi's move to the MLS club.

Marsman grabbed the headlines last June when he raised concerns over his team’s infrastructure and whether it was good enough to welcome a player of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s stature.

The Dutchman made his controversial comments in an interview with ESPN, saying:

"I personally think that this club is not ready for Messi’s arrival. We have a temporary stadium; people can just walk on the pitch, there are no gates. We also leave for the stadium without security. I think they aren't ready. But I hope he comes."

Inter Miami cancel Marsman's contract

Marsman received his marching orders on August 5, with Inter Miami announcing that they had exercised their Salary Budget Charge buyout on his MLS contract.

He made 29 appearances for Inter Miami since joining the club from Feyenoord in July 2021, per The Mirror.

The 32-year-old recorded six clean sheets and conceded 49 goals during his time in Miami. He made a combined 88 saves for the Herons in the 2021 and 2022 MLS regular seasons.

MLS teams use the buyout option to gain roster flexibility and potentially save some money by not having to pay the player bought out the full salary he is owed in his contract.

Messi’s MLS career is off to a flyer, scoring seven goals in four appearances for Inter Miami thus far, per Goal.com.

He opened his account with a dramatic last-minute free kick on his debut against Cruz Azul before registering doubles against Atlanta United, Orlando City, and FC Dallas to lead Inter Miami to the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup.
