FootballPep Guardiola Blasts New Added Time Rules: Arsenal’s Late Equaliser Dooms City in Community Shield
- Pep Guardiola criticised the rule makers after City's loss to Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield
- Manchester City conceded an equaliser in the 11th minute of added time in the second half
- Premier League and EFL officials have been instructed to crack down on time-wasting and dissent
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola blasted English football’s new approach to stoppage time after conceding a late equaliser against Arsenal in their Community Shield loss on Sunday.
Leandro Trossard denied City another trophy, scoring in the 11th minute of added time to force a penalty shootout.
The Gunners went on to win 4-1 in penalties, much to the dismay of Guardiola, who criticised the rule makers for the added time change during his press conference.
Guardiola blasts rule makers
Guardiola had a pop at the rule makers following City’s loss, saying:
“We will have to get used to this. We were winning 1-0. I had a feeling that not much happened to extend eight minutes. But it is a good question for the international board and all the people because they don’t consult with the managers, they don’t consult with the players.”
Only eight minutes were added at the end of the contest at Wembley, but a clash of heads between Thomas Partey and Kyle Walker during injury time saw the match extended even further, per Eurosport.
Managers, players, and fans will have to get used to longer matches, with Premier League and EFL referees set to add on stoppage times similar to the ones seen at the Qatar World Cup.
Longer matches in England
According to Mail Sport, the average time added in the EFL this past weekend was 16 minutes and 34 seconds, with officials now cracking down on dissent and time-wasting.

FootballGuardiola clearly isn’t a fan of this rule change, adding:
“We have to accept it. We have to do it. Now the games will be 100 minutes, that’s for sure. They extend for goals. Every time you score a goal. (Imagine) a 4-3 and they put on 45 seconds for seven goals. Tomorrow morning at 8am we will still be here playing. Don’t ask me my opinion, please.”
Added time isn’t the only rule change that Premier League managers have to contend with in the coming season.
Referees have also been instructed to clamp down on misbehaving managers, with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta booked for waving an imaginary yellow card during the Community Shield.
Haaland’s dad trolls Arsenal
Sports Brief recently reported on Erling Haaland’s father giving Arsenal the Premier League title favourites tag after the Gunners’ Community Shield win.
He posted a message on social media, writing: "Well done Arsenal, great win. You must be favourites for the league now."
The Gunners ended their eight-match losing streak against City with Sunday’s penalty shootout victory.
