  • Erling Haaland will be the man to watch when the new Premier League season gets underway
  • Haaland broke a couple of records last season in what was his first campaign in England
  • With more eyes on him now, the Norwegian will be going after new records,

In less than 12 hours, Erling Haaland will be back for the start of his second season in the English Premier League when he headlines Manchester City's squad to play Burnley in the first game of he season.

Haaland surpassed expectations in his debut season in England despite a lacklustre start to the season when they faced Liverpool in the same cup.

He went on to silence haters, hitting goal after goal as a number of records fell along the way. He finished the season with 52 goals in all competitions which helped Pep Guardiola's side to the unprecedented treble.

Among the huge records he smashed include the most number of goals in a single Premier League season. The Norwegian striker hit 36 goals, breaking Alan Shearer's and Andy Cole's 34-goal haul in the 90s.

Pressure will be on the 23-year-old to replicate his performances in front of goal for a second season running. If his preseason form is anything to go by, we are in for a treat.

Sports Brief takes a look at the records he can smash as the 2023/2024 season gets underway with additional information from BBC.

1. Most goals in a single season

Technically, it would be breaking his own record. Haaland will need to score 37 goals this season to surpass the 36-goal tally he set last season.

2. Most goals in all competitions

It might be a tall order, given that the record stands at 63 goals set by Dixie Dean in the 1927/1928 season - a record for an English player. Haaland had 52 goals last season.

3. City's top scorer's list

The former Borussia Dortmund man needs only 36 goals to get into Manchester City's list of top 20 scorers of all time. He will need 80 more goals to break into the top 10, which means the former is more feasible in the upcoming season.

4. Quickest player to 50 EPL goals

Andy Cole needed 65 appearances to reach 50 Premier League goals - the quickest any player has ever done it. Haaland only needs to score 14 goals in his next 29 appearances to break that record.

5. Quickest to 40 Champions League goals

The City star already has the record of being the fastest player to reach 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 goals in the Big Ears trophy. He has only made 30 appearances in the Champions League.

He only needs five more goals in his next 14 appearances to break Ruud Van Nisterlooy's, who used 45 appearances to reach 40 goals.

6. Most goals in UCL season

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record, having found the back of the net 17 times in a single Champions League campaign in 2013/2014.

Haaland managed 12 more last season.

7. Norway's top scorer

The good thing for Haaland is that his form is always replicated when featuring for Norway. He currently sits fourth on the list of all-time top scorers for the national team with 24 goals, as captured by Transfermarkt.

The leader, Jorgen Juve, is only nine goals away. Haaland has at least 6 games this year alone to close in and surpass that record.

The striker will be sure that he will be under intense scrutiny to do it all over again, but at such a young age, he has already shown that he thrives under pressure.

Updated Ballon d'Or rankings

Sports Brief had earlier reported that the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul marked the end of the 2022/2023 European football season.

It was a gruelling period for all those involved, featuring a packed schedule that also saw all leagues take a lengthy break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Mundial and the Champions League will be crucial in determining who will win the Ballon d'Or, with Haaland and Messi the favourites for this year.
