FootballPremier League Shows the Future of Broadcast With Body Cam Footage in Summer Series: POV Video
- The Premier League tried using body cam footage in the Summer Series in the United States
- Bruno Guimaraes and Youri Tielemans wore body cams during the Newcastle vs. Aston Villa game
- Fans loved the new camera angle, with some even petitioning to make it part of the broadcast
There is no questioning the fact that the Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world.
One of the reasons why billions of fans love watching the English top flight is the quality of its broadcast.
They are not resting on their laurels, with the Premier League testing a first-person view of the game in the Summer Series in the United States.
Newcastle star, Bruno Guimaraes and Aston Villa midfielder, Youri Tielemans wore body cams in their friendly match this week to show fans up-close action on the pitch.
The device was placed on the players' chests, giving fans unprecedented access to the match.
Guimaraes shows Newcastle huddle
The footage from Guimaraes showed the midfielder listening to a team talk from Kieran Trippier before the match.
The Englishman motivated his Newcastle teammates, saying:
“Lads this is a proper test now right, Aston Villa, this starts our season off. Standards, everyone is watching us. Like the gaffer says the other day, let’s give a good account of ourselves. 45 minutes, give everything!”
The footage gathered from the Brazilian’s body cam was breathtaking, to say the least, as it provided an alternative view of the contest against Aston Villa.
Fans were able to take in the game as if they were Guimaraes themselves.
You can hear the midfielder asking Sandro Tonali for the ball and relaying instructions to Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron for a one-two.
He can also be heard protesting a foul called against him, telling the official, “No, I touched the ball.” The referee responded to Guimaraes’ plea, saying, “It doesn’t matter.”

FootballTielemans give fans wild ride
Tielemans’ footage was equally fascinating, giving fans a unique view of the Belgian’s much-anticipated debut for Aston Villa.
He joined Unai Emery’s side on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City, and he made his first appearance for the club in the Premier League Summer Series against Newcastle United.
The clip started with Tielemans preparing to enter the game as a substitute.
Once he stepped on the pitch, the action was intense.
The Premier League’s sheer intensity was there for all to see as Tielemans’ body cam footage showed the midfielder having to make split-second decisions with the ball on the field.
One thing that the POV video vividly captures is the incredible speed of the players from both teams.
Tackles and corner kicks also have a different feel, with the footage making viewers act like they are the ones doing them.

With the trial run in the Summer Series being a huge success, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Premier League use the POV video in official games in England soon.
